A home EV charger — what you should know
A home charging point is the most convenient way to charge an electric car: the car charges overnight and is ready in the morning. A few things are worth considering before installation.
Power and fuse size
An 11 kW charger (3-phase, 16 A) suits most detached houses. It charges a typical battery full in a single night. The charging power should be sized to the house’s main fuse and other consumption — if needed, the charger can be fitted with dynamic load management that adjusts power automatically.
Placement
The charger is usually mounted on the wall of a garage or carport near the car’s charging port. A short cable run from the panel keeps costs down.
Safety
- The charger must have its own residual-current device (type B, or type A with DC detection).
- Installation may only be done by a Tukes-registered contractor.
- You can claim the household tax credit on the labour.
